Navigating Climate Education Policy Challenges in Canada: School Board Trustees

With Climate Caucus

Calling all school board trustees! Understand how climate obstruction narratives impact education policy in Canada through real examples from our speakers and members, and explore what can be done about it. This session will help school board trustees recognize common climate obstruction narratives, understand how they show up in education policy, and learn practical ways to respond in their local and provincial contexts.

Following the presentations, there will be time for Q&A and discussion among fellow trustees on practical approaches to strengthen climate learning in schools.

Speakers:

Lynette Shultz, Professor, University of Alberta – Researcher on global citizenship, justice in education policy, and educational responses to climate justice.

Carrie Karsgaard, Assistant Professor, Cape Breton University – Principal Investigator of Learning Collective Worldmaking, exploring relational approaches to climate education and policy.

Opposition Organizing & Monitoring in the Municipal Electoral Landscape (Part I)

Join us for an important briefing on how alt-right issues-based organizing in our communities is coordinated, centralized, and designed to build power for hate-groups in Canadian politics at all levels & what we can do about it, both in community and on the campaign trail. This workshop will:

  • Summarize alt-right issues based organizing already underway & discuss how this is already impacting municipalities, shifting political discourse, and creating divisions
  • Explore pathways to electoral success and countering hate group organizing before the election
  • Provide tools for off-season organizing for slates and coalitions to push back against hate organizing

This session will provide real instances of community leadership as well as a primer on key messages related to community safety, mental health, and substance use.
